Colloquium Topic: Advanced Electro-Optic Technologies for Ballistic Missile Defense

Electro-Optical (E-O) systems are important in almost every BMDO program and mission. As the advanced BMDO threat emerges, E-O must advance to keep pace. This presentation describes some of BMDOs advanced E-O technologies for surveillance, target detection, tracking, discrimination, and line of sight measurements for intercept and directed energy. Specific technologies presented include advanced focal plane arrays, laser radar, fused seekers, Space Based Laser and Airborne Laser.

Colloquium Speaker: Walter Dyer

Dr. Walter R. Dyer the Senior Research Scientist with Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO), received his PH.D. in Control Systems Engineering and Applied Mathematics from UCLA. Dr. Dyer is BMDO¹s Advanced Concepts Technical Fellows Coordinator, an advisor to BMDO management on interceptor technology, and leads a group of technical experts in performing studies and analyses. His previous positions at BMDO include Assistant Chief Scientist, Deputy Chief Scientist, and Project Integrator for Interceptor Technology. In these positions, he planned and executed programs in interceptor systems, seekers, algorithms and GN&C. Dr. Dyer has authored papers on sensors, seekers, and homing navigation, and is the General Chairman of the annual AIAA/BMDO Technology Conference.
