Colloquium Topic: The Future of Healthcare

Across Johns Hopkins University and within Johns Hopkins Medicine, there is recognition that the demands of the higher education and health care environments are rapidly changing. A framework must be provided to support the strategies of the enterprise, while selecting tools and technologies that will promote and support flexibility and rapid response to these requirements. In support of the discovery of new knowledge, and the pursuit of excellence that defines Johns Hopkins Medicine in its missions of research, education, and patient care, the Johns Hopkins Medicine Center for Information Services (JHMCIS) has focused on the strategic imperatives of service and clinical excellence, expense reduction, revenue maximization, and evidence-based care management. The tactical approach emphasized systems that will transform clinical decision making, executive decision making, and knowledge transfer. As we design, develop, and deploy systems, we focus on enterprise-wide coordination, collaborative priority-setting, and collegial problem-solving. Our energies are directed toward integrity of systems, investments that provide value to the enterprise, and the interoperability of technologies.

Colloquium Speaker: Stephanie L. Reel

Mrs. Stephanie Reel Vice President and Chief Information Officer for The Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine, received a B.S. in Information Systems Management from the University of Maryland, and an M.B.A. in Business Administration from Loyola College of Baltimore. She has more than fifteen years of experience in Information Systems, working with health care providers and payers. Under her direction, the Johns Hopkins Health System is implementing an advanced version of the Electronic Patient Record, utilizing web-based technology. This product provides workstation access to discharge summaries, operative notes, clinic visit notes, clinical results, allergy lists, problem lists and medication lists, across the continuum of care. Outcomes management and care management systems solutions are also being implemented. Within the past year, these efforts have been recognized by Computerworld and the Smithsonian Institute with an award that remains on display in the Smithsonian¹s Museum of American History. Under Mrs. Reel¹s direction, The Johns Hopkins Hospital has implemented a physician-based order management system. This system will serve as the foundation for an executive information system and a clinical decision support system that will be developed within the next year. Coupled with a health system-wide implementation of financial and administrative systems, these systems will provide for a patient-centric view across an integrated health care delivery system. Mrs. Reel is a member of the Information Technology Board for the State of Maryland, the Healthcare Information Systems Executive Association, the College of Healthcare Information Systems Executives, and the Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society. She has served as chairperson for the Maryland State Health & Medical Systems Committee, serves on the Advisory Board for Villa Julie College in Baltimore and is a member of the Customer Advisory Board for Bell Atlantic, and the Client Advisory Board for Compuware.
