APL Colloquium

June 9, 2023

Colloquium Topic: Pride and Physical Oceanography

The discipline of physical oceanography studies ocean features and dynamics, from turbulence up to global circulation patterns. The problem of how the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation might change in a warming climate will be the technical focus of this seminar. This issue will be put in the context of oceanographic observations, particularly ship-based observations. Some experiences of ship-based science will be shared, ending with advice for institutions and individuals to best support gender-diverse scientists at sea.

Colloquium Speaker: Jay Brett

Genevieve Jay Brett has their Bachelor of the Arts in physics and mathematics from Skidmore College. They studied physical oceanography in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program, receiving their Ph.D. in 2018 for their work on stirring and mixing in three-dimensional ocean eddies and gyres. Next, Dr. Brett was a postdoctoral fellow in the International Pacific Research Center at the University of Hawaii Manoa, working on an NSF-funded project, "The Impact of Climate Change on the Physics and Biology of the Ocean on Scales Down to the Submesoscale". Now, Dr. Brett is an oceanographer in the Force Projection Sector, working on both basic and applied oceanography.
