Tracking Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Our Contribution

is a coalition of organizations with the ambitious goal of providing independent, transparent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions estimates for every asset around the world. Knowing where GHGs are originating from is crucial to identifying where and how to reduce emissions as well as for tracking progress toward reduction goals. As part of the coalition, APL researchers are leading estimation of , wastewater treatment, and water reservoirs by using a combination of remote sensing, machine learning, data science, and modeling. The APL team has also been integral to generating the coalition’s first set of non-GHG estimates for many sectors.

In November 2024, Climate TRACE launched an updated dataset at the United Nations Conference of the Parties that includes over 660 million assets at the monthly timescale. GHGs are provided, including CO2, NO2, and CH4. New in 2024 is the inclusion of non-GHG data as well, including NOx, SO2, PM2.5, and others.
