Materials for Extreme Environments

In an era defined by rapidly advancing technology and national security challenges requiring increasingly prevalent operation in extreme environments, groundbreaking materials developments are needed.

By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, researchers at APL aim to reimagine and accelerate the targeted discovery of materials tailored to withstand and perform under the most demanding conditions, ensuring enhanced capabilities in extreme environments, such as space exploration, deep-sea exploration, hypersonic flight, and resource-constrained scenarios.

From materials that maintain optical and structural integrity at high temperatures, to superconductors with higher transition temperature and increased manufacturability, to novel structural materials fabricated from in situ resources, we are working to develop, predict, make, and measure mission-enabling materials at an accelerated pace.

Accelerating Materials Discovery for National Security Symposium

APL recently hosted the Accelerating Materials Discovery for National Security Symposium, bringing together nearly 200 experts from across government, academia, research, and industry. Attendees explored the challenges and emerging research in materials science for national security applications, extending to the most extreme environments. Discussions highlighted the urgency with which we must propel the nation’s ability to “PREDICT,” “MAKE,” and “MEASURE” mission-enabling materials, by leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning, high-throughput fabrication and characterization, and other emerging technologies.
